Terms of Service

1. Agreeing to these terms

By using Script&Sprite you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use it.

You must be at least 13 and have a parent or guardian's permission where required by the laws where you live.

We may update these terms. When the substance changes we'll ask you to agree again rather than change them quietly.

2. What Script&Sprite is

A tool for writing and exporting visual novels: a story map, a script editor, a scene stage, a player, and export to a self-contained web build or project JSON.

The hosted service stores your account and saved work on Netlify. A locally run copy uses local storage. Optional assistants, AI providers and external media involve additional services described in our privacy policy at /privacy.

It's provided as-is. We don't promise it will always be available, bug-free, or that we'll keep developing it.

3. Your work stays yours

You keep every right to the stories, characters, dialogue and art you create. We claim no ownership and no licence to sell, publish or train on your work.

We store and display your work only so the app can function for you.

You're responsible for having the rights to anything you upload. Don't upload art, music or writing you don't have permission to use.

4. AI features

AI generation is optional. Turning it off does not turn off account storage: work you save in the hosted editor is still sent to our server.

A locally configured model runs at the endpoint you choose. Check that endpoint and your deployment before assuming prompts stay on your own computer.

Optional cloud generation sends prompts to the provider you configure, under that provider's terms and privacy policy. Your own provider API key, if used in a separately configured editor feature, has its own billing relationship.

AI output can be inaccurate, biased, or resemble existing work. You are responsible for reviewing anything you generate before publishing it. We don't warrant that generated content is original or free of third-party rights.

5. Connecting outside AI assistants (MCP)

You can link an external assistant to your approved account through OAuth consent, or use an older account-specific token connection. The public plugin receives only the permissions you approve. Linking ChatGPT sends the tool results you request to OpenAI; other assistants receive results under their own provider policies.

Read permission accesses your currently open novel and requested artwork. Write permission can create, change, replace and delete its content. Switching open novels changes which project is accessible. Export a backup before substantial edits. Revoke OAuth access at /connect; treat older access tokens like passwords.

Ordinary account connections cannot read admin records, other accounts or application source. An operator-only legacy token can expose source tools when separately enabled by the operator; it is not part of the public plugin.

Anything you send to an external assistant is handled under that provider's terms. We can't control what they retain or how they use it.

6. Image hosting on Wix

When Wix hosting is configured by the operator, media uploads may be stored in that Wix Media Manager and served from its CDN. This is not necessarily a separate Wix account owned by each author. Wix's terms and privacy policy apply to that hosting.

Projects can contain external asset links or embedded files. Hosted asset records may also contain the file identifier used by the media service.

Deleting an asset reference, including through MCP, does not guarantee deletion of the underlying file from Wix or another host. Contact support to request removal of externally hosted media.

Images served from a CDN are reachable by anyone with the link. Don't upload anything you need to keep private.

7. Accounts, passwords and recovery

Passwords are never stored in readable form — only as a salted scrypt hash. Nobody, including us, can read your password.

There is no email-based password reset. If you forget your password, the security question you set is the only way back in through the app.

If you have no security question set, recovery needs the command-line reset tool, which requires access to the machine holding the accounts.

You're responsible for keeping your password and any access tokens secure, and for activity under your account.

8. Where your data lives

Running locally, your novels and account records are plain files in the .data folder on your own machine.

Deployed to Netlify, the same records are stored in Netlify Blobs.

Passwords and security answers are hashed. Novel content is not end-to-end encrypted by this application; authorised machine or hosting administrators can access it. The hosting provider controls its own infrastructure protections.

You are responsible for your own backups. Use Export to keep a copy you control.

9. Credits and payments

Payments are currently switched off. No card is taken and nothing is charged.

Credits shown in the app have no monetary value, are not refundable, and may be reset when real payments are introduced.

Local AI and bring-your-own-key cloud AI don't consume credits.

10. What you may not do

Don't create or distribute content that is illegal, sexualises minors, harasses or threatens people, or infringes someone else's rights.

Don't use the service to attack, overload or gain unauthorised access to any system, including this one.

Don't misrepresent AI-generated content as the work of a real person without saying so.

11. Exporting and publishing

Exported games are yours to distribute. Once exported, the file is entirely under your control and we can't recall or update it.

You're responsible for what you publish, including any third-party assets it contains and any disclosure your audience or platform requires about AI-generated content.

12. Liability

The service is provided without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows.

We're not liable for lost work, lost revenue, or damage arising from your use of the service — including AI output, data loss, or a third-party service such as Wix, Netlify, Google or OpenAI failing.

Nothing here excludes liability that can't legally be excluded.

13. Ending your use

You can stop using the service at any time, export your project, delete novels from your library and revoke OAuth links. For account deletion, legacy copies or externally hosted files, use the contact form and select Privacy or deletion request. See /privacy for retention and provider limitations.

We may suspend access that breaks these terms or endangers other users.
